Turning 65 With Covered California: Questions to Settle Before You Change Coverage
If you have Covered California coverage and Medicare may be starting, use this checklist before changing either coverage.
Confirm Medicare before changing your Marketplace coverage
Covered California and Medicare can overlap in ways that affect coverage and financial help. Covered California says that people who are enrolled in, or eligible for, premium-free Medicare Part A cannot enroll in new Covered California coverage. It also says an existing Covered California plan is not automatically canceled when Medicare begins.
If you become eligible for Medicare, report that change to Covered California within 30 days. Covered California generally needs 14 days’ notice to end coverage and cannot cancel it retroactively. Eligibility for premium-free Part A generally ends financial help through Covered California. Confirm the exact date and effect in your case before changing coverage.
Ask Social Security to confirm whether you qualify for premium-free Part A and when Medicare coverage starts. Then ask Covered California what steps apply to your current plan. Do not assume a general article can set your individual start date or cancellation date.
Think about everyone on the household plan
A Medicare change for one person can affect the rest of a Covered California household differently. Family members who are not eligible for Medicare may still need coverage and may still qualify for financial help. Gather the current plan notice, the names of everyone covered, and your Medicare timing questions before calling.
Do not cancel a Marketplace plan first and sort out the dates later. Confirm the next step with the official programs so you can avoid an unintended gap.
Get help with the right question
For Medicare eligibility and enrollment timing, use Social Security and Medicare.gov. For a Covered California plan, use Covered California. A licensed insurance agent can help you prepare coverage questions, while HICAP offers free, confidential California Medicare counseling.
Keep a record of the person you spoke with, the date, and any next steps. That makes it easier to compare instructions from the official programs before you change coverage.
Three things to do next
- Confirm Medicare eligibility and start dates with Social Security or Medicare.
- Ask Covered California how a Medicare change affects everyone on the household plan.
- Keep a written record of the dates and instructions you receive before changing coverage.
